MUNA _ Model United Nations Assembly Aug 2024
Rotary D9815 Youth Program - MUNA 2024 > Gold for Glen Waverley
The Rotary District 9815 MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly) took place at Lyndale Secondary College, Dandenong North, on Saturday17th August.
RCMGW sponsored two teams – one from Wellington Secondary College (representing Saudi Arabia) and one from Glen Waverley Secondary College (representing North Korea).
The event was opened by DG9815 Colin Byron. The guest speaker was a past participant and Lyndale college student, Gabrielle Williams, State MP Dandenong, and the Minister for Government Services, Consumer Affairs, and Public & Active transport.
Twenty-eight delegations representing UN-member states participated. Four resolutions were debated over the day, as per the program below.
Program Schedule
09:00am Flag Procession
10:30am Resolution 1: The situation in the South China Sea
12:05pm Resolution 2: Strengthening the role of the UN in the promotion of democratisation and enhancing periodic and genuine elections
2:05pm Resolution 3: Preventing and combatting crimes that affect the environment
3:40pm Resolution 4. State of global food security
A good audience of teachers, parents, Rotarians and Rotaractors observed the proceedings. RCMGW had several members in attendance over the course of the day.
WSC (Saudi Arabia) were programmed to formally speak against Resolution 2 and GWSC (DPR Kores) against Resolution 3 , but all delegations were encouraged to speak and put their country’s position on each resolution.
It is extremely pleasing to report that at the end of the day the judges determined that the “best delegation” had been our sponsored team from Glen Waverley Secondary College, Arjun and Mukarram, representing North Korea. They certainly spoke well, clearly and forcefully. As well as taking the $300 prize, they will have their names and school inscribed on the Rotary District 9815 MUNA Perpetual Shield which their school holds for 12 months until the following MUNA. Their teacher Thomas Tapley, has already promised that GWSC will return next year to defend their title. He also thanked RCMGW for our support, sponsorship and providing the school with the opportunity to participate.
We will be inviting Arjunand Mukarram, and Thomas to attend our Youth Night on 7th October to talk to us about their experience and their victory.
