Youth Night at Rotary Monash Glen Waverley Oct 2024
President Don welcomed the young people who we had sponsored to take part in some of the Rotary Youth Programs, like RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly) and parents and teachers
came along as well. In addition, we presented the winner of our Primary Schools Essay Competition, Olivia Li, her parents and teacher Sharon. Olivia won a $100 Voucher from Robinsons Book store and a certificate of achievement and Sharon was presented on behalf of the school (Mount View Primary School) with a $150 voucher for library books, and a perpetual trophy for the school. Olivia read out her essay, which was titled “Eva’s Adventure in the Unknown, and a copy of that is attached to the email with this bulletin if you would like to read it.
Next to present of their experiences at MUNA were Arjun and Mukarram from Glen Waverley Secondary College. They represented the Peoples Republic of North Korea. They certainly did their research on what they would be assessed on, and presented those exact requirements. And they gave an excellent, professional and amusing presentation to us as well. They managed to convince the other nations that “It is not Greed, it is Ambition”, and which was reiterated on several occasions during the UN debates and “That Environmental terrorism is condonable”.
Their powerful presentation resulted in them winning 3 out of 4 resolutions and were the overall winners of the MUNA weekend. The boys thanked their teachers, and the Rotary Club. They think Rotary is very good at celebrating young people’s achievements.
Also, that their teachers Mr Tapley and Mr Robinson were a great help to them and had lots of suggestions on how to present their resolutions. The boys felt that they will recommend to other students to participate in MUNA in the future.
The next group were the young people who attended RYLA. Lauren told us that she appreciated the connections she made, the laughter, helped her overcome fear and make new friends. She felt the RYLA experience changed her perspective on how to live your life. The next speaker, Joanna thought it emphasised individual values, problem solving, public speaking skills and time management.
Also felt they had learned to emphasise with others and allow others to support them. Others felt it was important that they apply what they have learned to general life skills, and one lad learned that he could sing in a talent show.
